Sandblasting Gun Blows Air But No Sand? Causes and Solutions

Why Your Sandblasting Gun Blows Air But No Sand — Causes & Fixes | HOLDWIN Sandblasting Tips

Is your sandblasting gun only blowing air but no sand? Learn the top 5 causes and easy fixes. Keep your blasting efficient with HOLDWIN professional tools and nozzles.

 Problem Overview

When your sandblasting gun blows air but no sand, it doesn’t necessarily mean your gun is broken. Most of the time, the issue is caused by moisture, low air pressure, or clogged components.

Common Causes & Fixes

1️⃣ Moist or Clumped Abrasive

English:
If your abrasive absorbs moisture, it will clump and block the suction.
Fix: Keep your abrasive dry and sealed from humidity.

2️⃣ Clogged or Damaged Suction Hose

English:
A blocked or cracked suction hose prevents sand from being drawn up.
Fix: Clean or replace the suction hose regularly.

3️⃣ Worn-out Nozzle

English:
A worn nozzle disrupts airflow and suction.
Fix: Replace with a new ceramic or boron carbide nozzle.

4️⃣ Low Air Pressure or Air Leak

English:
Sandblasting requires stable pressure (6–8 Bar). Any leak or pressure drop prevents suction.
Fix: Check for leaks and ensure your compressor provides enough airflow.

5️⃣ Blocked Gun Body or Valve

English:
Dust and debris can clog internal parts.
Fix: Clean the gun’s air and sand inlets frequently.

Prevention & Maintenance Tips

  • Use dry and consistent abrasive media

  • Clean gun and hose regularly

  • Replace worn nozzles on time

  • Maintain a stable air pressure

  • Choose the right sandblasting gun model

Have new holdwin x002eirvt that is not picking up sand. Pick up tube is clear, can put vacuum cleaner on it and pull up sand. I have two of these guns and seem like they are blowing air down the pick up tube not making a vacuum. See no marking on the orfus to tell me the size. The nose is pink.
